Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi is being tested in kidney problems, which germinated in December but expects the striker to return to training on Wednesday.
Argentina international part of the Club World Cup in Japan was lost as a result of renal colic, abdominal discomfort commonly caused by kidney stones.
Reports emerged in Spain on Monday suggesting Messi could face a minor surgery to correct the problem, which seems to have persisted in recent weeks despite 28 years old, missing only one game since the beginning of the year .
“Leo Messi will be subjected to different tests on Monday and Tuesday to assess the development of kidney problems suffered in December,” read a statement from Barcelona.
“On Wednesday, the player will return to training with the first team.”
Messi could be rested for the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Valencia on Wednesday as Barca hold a 7-0 aggregate advantage.
