hands and helps them stay on track, even when they are distracted or emotionally upset, except when they are involved in text messages on their mobile phones ” sixth sense stabilizes drivers, according to a study.
In the study, 59 volunteers were asked to drive the same route of a road four times in “normal conditions” of being focused on driving; while being distracted with challenging questions cognitively, emotionally charged questions, while preoccupied with trivialities text messages.
The results showed that when participants led in all three situations – except under normal conditions – became his nervous hands during handling of the vehicle wheels, but in a straight path.
“Mind the driver can stroll and feelings can boil, but a sixth sense maintains a confident person, at least as to deviate from its path,” said lead researcher Ioannis Pavlidis from the University of Houston, in the US ..
However, when drivers are distracted by texting, this nervous manipulation resulted in significant deviations from rail and unsafe driving.
“What makes texting is so dangerous that wreaks havoc on this sixth sense,” Pavlidis said.
This is because the function performed by a part of the brain called the anterior cingulate cortex, or ACC – is known to be involved automatically as an error corrector when there is a conflict – in cognitive, emotional and flat sensorimotor, or text messages, stress factors.
“This increases physiological stress levels, funneling ‘fight or flight” power to the driver’s arms, resulting nervousness in handling the wheel, “Pavlidis said in the journal Scientific Reports.
